Chrysoula Kechagioglou & Púrpura / Cruel Sister

Originally referred to as “The Twa Sisters”, the song is a murder ballad that was collected by Francis J. Child, arranged by the Greek folk group Chrysoula K. & Purpura. Two sisters go down by the sea, where the older one pushes the younger in and refuses to pull her out again. Her motive is jealousy. When the murdered girl’s body floats ashore, someone makes a musical instrument out of it. This occurs after the musician has taken it to the family’s household, so that the elder sister is publicly revealed as the murderess.
